Changing Color With Shadow

How do you change the color and keep the shadows from mirrors, etc.

make a new layer, select the outline of the area that you want to colour, fill it with that colour (in the new layer) and change the layer mode to suit your needs (i usually use overlay, as it seems to do the best job with keeping the natural highlights and lowlights of the car
