View Full Version : Let's wake this place up!

08-20-2014, 04:02 AM
Hi guys,

I know this is the wrong section for this but i figured you'd all be more likely to see it here.

Is anyone up for doing a mini competition with a shorter time limit (say 1 week?) just to get some fresh material circulating on the site and get things moving again?

If so, please let your interest be known!

I'd be interested...

08-21-2014, 04:41 AM
Good man!
Anyone else?

08-21-2014, 08:20 AM
Im in for a challenge, whip up a base car, and we'll agree on it ;)

08-21-2014, 11:23 AM
Count me in (when i got the time)

08-22-2014, 03:05 AM
I'm going to be away for a few days but as soon as i'm back i will get a base up and hopefully get things moving!

A few thoughts before we begin... I'm fairly new at auto-chopping as a form of photo editing in doing these for only a few months, so I'm likely doing all of this the hard way beginning as a curiosity editing one certain car photo, and now it's became a deeper interest in creating alternative versions of popular models and the challenge of making them appear fully realistic in the editing.

I'm also probably older than most auto-choppers so I will likely have differing tastes and opinions in what looks good or not in the car modifications. And I have not yet learned the specific processes commonly used for complete paint-over type work in creating the alterations that way so I've figured out how to do things otherwise resulting in a more photo-realistic look as opposed to an artistic rendering with the painting processes.

One may be a good photo-editor, but not a painter or an accurate or creative car designer, or visa-versa. On other similar auto-chop based websites, I see many different styles and intents of the modifications ranging from realistic production to aftermarket body-mod kit type alterations, to wild fantasy creations.

Any art-edit website or contest can also be confusing if not knowing what direction to aim for in the edit for best results with the target viewing and voting audience. You may create a great image, but nobody may like it on any one certain site, but yet it may be fully praised on another site by a different audience.

Sorry if this sounds over-complicated. The reason for this point is that on another website with auto-chop editing contests, a certain type of car styling in the edit is commonly favored by the voters and participants seemingly regardless of editing quality and/or attention to details & fitment.

So I'm suggesting we all keep in mind that we're naturally going to produce differing results pending our skills, specific training or editing abilities overall and some criteria may need to be defined regarding how we judge the images here on this site whether by quality of editing, coolness and quality of the car design modifications, overall image appeal including background selection and placement, or all of the above weighed equally or proportionally in deciding the best image or editing job.

Just my opinion... I'm looking forward to a friendly challenge here. ;)

I'm really excited about seeing this! Personally I don't have time to participate, but if you need anything from me, just ask.

08-27-2014, 10:18 PM
Great to see you here, Kenny. Great to have some good vets with us here.
Im waiting in agony for a base, im really looking forward to this.
Shame you dont have the time to join us, hope to see something from you again soon.

I will make a post based on a piece I have done recently. There is a lot of car stuff, but not so much photoshopping of the cars themselves, I do a lot of photographing them though.

08-31-2014, 05:01 AM
Sorry for the delay guys - here is the base as promised. I hope this car isn't too played out at the moment. I figure that it is a recreation of a classic which fits quite well with meaning of this mini comp:

Toyota GT86:

Is everyone happy with a 1 week deadline, say Next Sunday evening?

I'm afraid i'm not too sure what the norm is with regard to who receives completed chops / posts up a poll so Kenny if you wouldn't mind, can i maybe ask you about this?

Good luck!

08-31-2014, 09:18 AM
Just a thought..if you guys want a really quick fire round we can even do a 24 hour deadline winner posts new base and so on?

08-31-2014, 04:15 PM
Im in on a one week comp, a 24h comp might be a bit to short since there are others who might not have seen the base yet.
Altho im not a huge fan of the base, because its already a "tuned" 86 ill see what i can do with it.

09-01-2014, 05:30 AM
Kenny - do we need to move this into the official competition area?

09-01-2014, 11:36 AM
I'm still not sure what the goal of this chop is supposed to be... to further "tune" it with wilder body mods? As Martin-Andre mentioned; it's already 'tuned' with a front and side bodykit.

Just an example... This one doesn't already have that stuff on it.

09-01-2014, 12:19 PM
Surely the point of being a good 'chopper is to be able to improve the look of virtually any car image in a sympathetic and realistic way?
If you would rather do a different base (I.e your example) please confirm so that we are all on the same page.
For the record, I'm certainly not the best 'chopper but I would be up for having a go at any image (restoration, mod, extreme - whatever)

09-01-2014, 05:24 PM
rocketbunny, I'm new at this auto-chopping, for me..as a form of photo-editing, and I'm still learning the terminology and such of what people are talking about, so I may ask some relatively dumb questions perhaps because I didn't begin doing these in the same way.

Since we are not all pros here, I agreed with Martin in that perhaps a stock base might be a better choice for a 'friendly' competition by allowing those to create their own body kits (if wanted), or other mods. I had never seen this specific car before to know what it was suppose to look like so I did an online image search for other examples and saw that similar shot without the body kit, and only posted it here as an example of a possible alternative referring to Martin's comment.

And then jeez.. it figures too, in that process I also found a previously edited GT86 image that a well publicized artist in the 'chopper' world had already done in nearly the exact same idea I had in mind for this. And it also looks very close to possibly being from the same or similar base image you had chosen here. So either way, I'll figure something else to do with it and just do what I can. :noidea:

09-01-2014, 05:43 PM
dan, maybe you've mistaken my comment for aggression?
I'm more than happy for someone to reselect a new base for this mini comp. if the '86 has been done before, then by all means post up an alternative.
This is supposed to be fun after all so we may aswell all be happy with the base!

09-01-2014, 05:47 PM
Unless we have some other opinions pipe up... otherwise, just continue as is.

09-02-2014, 01:42 AM
1 week competition is the best i think..and I don't want to be a pain in the *** but I already started on the first base that RB gave us.So what base are we gonna use??

On a previous forum we also did some contests and we just send our finished chops to a neutral admin (for example Kenny here on this forum). He posted our chops on the forum whitout our names so we didn't knew what chops were from the other members. That add a poll to it and we can vote on the finished chops (btw, you can't vote on your own chop). The winner can choose the next base.

Maybe a good way to do it here aswell?

09-02-2014, 02:35 AM
Ive already started too but, i've got an idea.
How about we all chop a GT86, no matter what pic, you can choose one you like and go with it. The most "creative"/best executed chop wins? :)

09-02-2014, 03:53 AM
Nice on RK. Let's just stick with the original 86 base and see what comes out of it. It's only a week after all and the winner can choose a completely different base next time to mix things up!
Hope every yon is cool with that.

09-02-2014, 03:55 AM
Sorry Martin, just posted and didn't see your reply!
I'm happy with that suggestion. I'm sure a few have started on the original base & some would prefer a diff base so a general '86 comp may well work!

09-02-2014, 07:36 PM
Sorry I haven't popped in recently. What's your official start date? I would recommend starting a thread in Battle Arena to mark the official start, just to avoid confusion.

I can post up the poll, or one of you can as well. I don't think any of us voting have much of a bias, so if we know who did what it probably won't matter much.

What we have done in the past is pick a car, and it's up to everyone else to find a photo of it. I think this can work well, for now at least.

I like the idea of the winner picking the next base as well, as long as the same person isn't winning all the time.

09-03-2014, 04:10 AM
I have just posted a new thread in the battle area for this mini comp.
Same start date and deadline apply as to this thread although i have stated that if anyone is unhappy with the submitted base they can use their own GT86 base instead.
i have stated a few rules etc (as i think is the norm?)
I just need to confirm where contestants should send their completed chops to. Kenny - how does this normally work? would you be up for receiving them maybe?

09-03-2014, 11:20 AM
Send them my way, and I can put up the anonymous sort of poll.

Good luck to all of you! Looking forward to seeing them.

09-03-2014, 11:28 AM
Thanks Kenny, should people PM them to you, or email them? If so which email address to use?
This should be good! Hopefully we can get things moving again!

09-04-2014, 09:19 PM
PM will be best. That way I don't have to fuss with uploading them and all that.

09-05-2014, 03:04 AM
Cheers Kenny!

09-15-2014, 04:31 PM
woah! this place still lives!!! kenny!! glad to see you still keeping this place up man. whats the base car? wouldnt mind shaking off some rust for old times sake.

09-15-2014, 08:52 PM
Niaz!!! Good to see you on here again!

Check out New Era - Short Competition #2. There is another competition that has just started. The base is a Honda Civic.

Thanks to a few of the new members this place is still alive, and attempting to make a bit of a comeback. I'm just helping them a little, while they do most of the work.

I won't be able to do this week's competition due to a large amount of work (3-4 car photoshoots plus freelance design work)

09-16-2014, 03:41 AM
Slowly but surely - it's coming back!
