Talking Realistic Carbon Fiber II

Hey everybody. I decided to make another carbon fiber tutorial because the first one i made (http://www.photoshopchop.com/photosh..._articleid/159) uses a technique that only works under certain light. This tutorial works better for cars that are under direct sunlight. Enjoy!

Ok so we're going to start off with this car. Select the hood, or whichever part of the car you wish to carbon fiber.

Press ctrl+c and then ctrl+v. This will create a new layer of the hood we selected. Now we want to change the color of the hood. Go to image>adjustments>replace color. Select a color on the hood that is the majority color. Then on the bottom, choose the color you want to replace it with. We want a dark blueish green color. Increase fuzziness to about 200. You might want to decrease the saturation of the hood after you press OK a little bit as well.

We're going to use this hood as a donor. Make a selection in the middle section of the hood. Press ctrl+c and then go back to the other car and press ctrl+v to paste it there.

Now press ctrl+t to transform the carbon fiber. Adjust it in order to fit completely over the hood.

Now ctrl+click on the original hood layer. This will create a selection. Press ctrl+shift+i to invert the selection. Click back on the carbon fiber layer. Press ctrl+x to get ride of excess carbon.

Now adjust the blending mode on the carbon fiber layer to hard light (you may find a different mode works better, this one just worked best for this pic).

Ok now the blue near the windshield is way too dark. You want a light blue to show the sky's reflection. So duplicate the carbon fiber layer and change the blending mode to hue. This should make the hood a light blue color. Now we only want the part near the windshield to blue, so use a big eraser with 0% hardness and erase the rest. You may want to decrease the opacity of this layer so the blue is not so saturated.

Make sure you erase this part of the carbon fiber-hard light layer so the carbon fiber-hue layer can show through.

Now ctrl+click on the hood layer to bring up the selection again. Then click on the carbon fiber-hard light layer. Grab your burn tool and set it to about 45% with a small brush. Slightly burn the edges of the visible carbon fiber pattern. This will increase realism by a lot.

Alright, this is the last step, but probably the most important one. The carbon fiber pattern is not always visible under certain light. So you will want to use a small eraser with about 70% hardness and about 65% opacity and start erasing the dark areas. Make sure you erase raised areas on the hood too because it will not look real if the lines are going straight over raised angular areas.

You're done! Hope you enjoyed it and got good results!

quite realistic in many ways..but maybe add another carbon layer with the pattern going the opposite way on maybe a linear light...or a hard light...with a light opacity...that should improve even more

Absolutely not.

Imo changing the blending mode is the single biggest mistake
ever in the photoshop world of carbon. Everyone does it, and
it always sucks. Blending the original donor with a desaturated
and darkened/contrasted hood layer is better. It has always
worked for me.

Edit - Mind you your results weren't bad, but you are missing
blue hues.
