ok, that quick and simple is that AWD=4x4, but 4x4 doesn't = AWD
AWD is a permanent 4x4(the vehicle has 4 wheels and the engine moves all 4 wheels)
4x4 can switch from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive, usually by a switch or lever

I think the picture you posted refers to AWS (all wheel steering). I may be wrong.

Actualy the term AWD needs to be updated with all the new technology thats been invented since the 1st AWD cars came out. These days AWD isnt just all 4 wheels being independantly powered full time anymore, the newest in this technology actualy has a similar capability than that of 4WD by being able to disengage drive through all 4 wheels, using mainly its rear wheels for various performance reasons, but on board computers can in fractions of a second engage all 4 wheels again when it picks up that its needed. All this is done automaticaly without the driver ever realizing it. Cars with this newest upgrade to this system usualy also comes out with software that alows for performance settings such as Launch Control etc.
The ability for a car to use all 4 wheels in steering is called Super-HICAS four-wheel steering and although its used in AWD cars a lot these days because of its bad steering ability caused by all 4 wheels delivering power, it isnt limmited to only AWD or 4WD cars and was actualy used in some models of Honda Preludes in the 1990's already. If you wanna know more about the 4WS technology search for Super Hycas Steering as they are the people who invented this technology.
