Default Vista/ MCE XP

Yeah.

Well i used to run no media centre edition of xp, then i upgraded to vista ultimate, but the annoying thing is, when i installed vista it never asked me if i wanted to format so never.... now everytime i start up i have to choose whice one i want to use, is there no way of setting one as a defaullt so i dont have to choose one each time or even delete the old one? its pretty annoying and if no one can help i will just format again

*BUZZ* nope

Hold the "WINDOWS KEY" on your keyboard and press "PAUSE/BREAK"
--or--
Right click on your "MY COMPUTER" icon and click "PROPERTIES"

This will take you to the "SYSTEM PROPERTIES" menu. From there go to "ADVANCED" then in "STARTUP AND RECOVERY" look for "SETTINGS"

After that, a screen named "STARTUP AND RECOVERY" will pop up and give you a bunch of features. You are going to look for "SYSTEM STARTUP" at the top and find "to edit startup options manually, click edit. 'EDIT'"

Click the "EDIT" button and it will open a session of "NOTEPAD." The text in there will read off like this.

Quote:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptOut
***IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU COPY THIS INFORMATION AND SAVE IT TO A FLOPPY DISK***

You are going to see your old XP, and Vista. Delete the option for windows XP Media center startup, and make sure after vista you have the "/fastdetect /NoExecute=OptOut" there.

If you have 2 operating systems, it's likely that you will have a "WIN" folder and a "WINDOWS" folder, each of these hold the core files for your OS.

It is likely that you have the other os on another partition.

" multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" "

I haven't install Vista yet, but my theory is it will say.

" multi(1)disk(1)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows Vista Ultimate" "

Change that to

" multi(1)disk(1)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows Vista Ultimate" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptOut "

Get what I mean? If you have any trouble post the information for the boot in here and I will reconfigure it for you.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE WORD MICROSOFT HAS A SPACE IN IT WHEN ON THE FORUMS HERE, I DID NOT PUT THAT SPACE THERE, IT IS AN AUTOMATIC EDIT AND WILL NEED TO BE DIS-REGARDED, THANKS.
