Default ART GTR (Mercedes Benz CLS) toon

Another white toon. This time, my favourite MB of the moment the CLS. The 2 things I find hard to toon are the indicators and tyre tread. Anyway here it is..

yes good start... for the tyre threads when i am doing mine... i make the path with the pen tool and stroke it in black and duplicate that layer, then i stroke it on a third layer in white. i then change one of the black to color burn (blending mode) and the white one to color dodge and adjust their opacities. then i just move them to the right and left and up and down a bit untill they look right. if you look at my impreza kool art toon a couple posts down u will see what i mean

It's perfectly understandable to the trained eye, lol. What he's saying is that he...
  • makes a tread path with the pen tool, outlining where the lines on the tire are going to go.
  • Strokes the path with black lines to get the physical lines in the layer setting the Blending option to "Color Burn." (takes the color of the tire and burns that color into it making it really dark)
  • Duplicates the layer and makes the lines white setting the Blending option to "Color Dodge."(Burns that color into the tire making it really bright)
  • He then moves each layer until the tread looks like it has depth, usually moving each layer left or right depending on the angle.
  • Lastly he adjusts the Opacity of each layer so as not to have too strong of highlights, giving it a more realistic feel.
That better? lol

A little added bonus to this minitut of his would be to make a gradient over the top of the tire, going from Dark on the bottom fading away the further up it goes. That would give the whole tire a more realistic feel as well.

Nice toon btw, just add the tread and it'll look even better. You may also want to create a reflection on the far right exhaust tip, right now the solid color isn't doing justice. Lastly, add some outlining bolder colors into the rims, they look good but they don't POP like they should. You'd be amazed at what some defining black lines would do between the ring and the spokes.

Thank you both for showing me how to toon tyre treads! I always found them hard work, but now i will try it for the next one or even update this one with them. Cheers.
