Hey guys.
Been screwing around at school and I threw these together over the course of maybe a week and a half. All of them are still WIP's, and all of them need a lot more work. Here's my first one.... fairly simple, I still need to do the lug nuts/bolts on it but I figured I'd post it for now.
Here's my second one, with only a few peices, still doesn't have a tire. Lot of work for this one.
And here's my latest, with still a bit of work left. I need to put on the bolts, and I need to plaster a BBS logo on that red part. Expect an update on this puppy before friday.
best one yet
All the 3d work has been done in Inventor and all the 2d work was dont in AutoCAD.

The rims look great. How did you apply the tread to the tires? Is it an extruded cut and then circular patterned around the center axis? Also, to do the "spokes", did you draw a 3D sketch and sweep the profile, or are they lofts? Nice work!!!
I'm gonna try and throw some together in Solidworks and see what they turn out like. Got both Inventor and Solidworks here, but I prefer Solidworks.

mmm for the spokes I drew a section then revolved it, after that I made a cut from the front elevation. For the tread I made a sketch of the tread, embossed it on the tire, then used circular pattern.

Did you mean you extruded the sketch on the tire instead of embossed it? Maybe it is in a newer version but I am using 5, and it is not on there.
**Nevermind this post, emboss was an Inventor update, but I am capable of doing it in Solidworks**

yeah really.
i made some updates to the BBS wheel (cf) and I just started a new wheel (split 5 spoke). All I have done with it is the spokes but they go together pretty quick when you have all your sections done.
I'm also gonna make a logo for this one.
BTW brain, the program is called Autodesk Inventor 7. I think theres like a version 9 out now. Not sure.. its pretty cheap for a 3d CAD tool also ~$100 I THINK).
although I'd recomend Solidworks over inventor any day. solidworks has the great beginner feel to it but it actually has a rendering engine it it so you can really show off your stuff.

Inventor for how much??? List price for Version 9 is $5,195.00. I don't think you could even get the student version for $100.00. Solidworks goes for about the same as Inventor.
I agree with you about choosing Solidworks over Inventor. I use them both regularly, and I find it easier to accomplish most things in Solidworks. Plus like you said, Solidworks comes with Photoworks, so you can render, unlike in Inventor. It also has a really good "lite" version of a design optimization and simulation tool called Cosmos. Flow Works is another good add-on to simulate and test fluid flow in parts along with heat transfer. That is a little bit more involved and not needed to model a good rim.

Mmm yeah Inventor is really aimed more at CNC'ing or manufacturing and that's the only thing I dont like about it. Its got a while bunch of material attributes and stuff (density, mass, malleability etc. etc. etc.) and a bunch of sheet metal features. Really wish it would have a rendering engine as I'm pretty proficient with it, although I haven't tried out SW just yet. I'm itching to try it sometime but that doesn't look too likely...
I'll have to check the price on Inventor real quick.
ok nvm i guess I was wrong, must've been some other software I was looking at.

I don't know too much about the automotive design industry, but I will give you any kind of advice that I can.
As for a "cheap" 3D program, I really don't know of anything. As you may have read a few posts ago, Inventor and Solidworks are among the cheapest programs out there that I know of. This is a link to a freeware program developed to help you learn 3D.
http://www.askoh.com/freecad/freecad8.zip
I have never used it myself so I don't know truly how good it is. I would first suggest learing some type of 2D program first. Just so you gain the knowledge and are able to understand 2D drawings. Take some drafting courses if they are available in your area. After highschool, pursue a college degree from a school that offers some type of automotive design degrees. I think my best bit of advise is to either go to the library or search on the internet. These resources can supply you with more information than any one else could.

Lookin good hawk, nice work.
As far as the free 3d programs, I know of one off hand..Blender @ blender.com(imagine that?)...there's a few others out there that are free to d/l but I'm not sure on the names. Do a search for a 3d forum and guarantee that they can tell you all the decent programs, and pices on them, out there..

yah my friend used blender a bit when it was on the school computers. I believe it has a rendering enine it it so you can make some pretty detailed peices in it and really show it off.
btw, can you move thsi to the right section? I think I might've put it in the wrong one (maybe move it to off the wall chops???)
