wow you're hopeless.
[j/k]
just mess around with all the tools like you probably did in photoshop when you first got it to figure out what each one does. although its usually not that easy with CAD programs if you don't know what you're doing as it asks for a bunch of dimensions and inputs.

i think the most important concept of solidworks is understanding the way it works.
many SW experts reccomend you think of object in their simplest forms. instead of including those curves in the initial extrude, you can go back later when its a 3d solid and work them out.
it basically boils down to making sketches, and then either extruding or revolving them in a Boolean Geometric environment. after you are in 3d mode, you select another face and create a sketch on top of that or use one of the 3D dolids tools (fillet, chamfer, hole, split, etc.)
and back to the simple shapes concept... imagine everything in simple shapes broken into different parts. You could, rather easily, model a whole pencil as a single part, or you could break it down into an assmbly of many smaller peices.
it just takes some getting used to and a bit of experience before you start thinking about objects a bit differently and figuring out how you would go about modeling them.

^^^Good explanation Hawk.
Maybe we should start off a bit easier. Maybe like making a revolved sketch or even a simple a simple cube, just to get your feet wet. I don't think you will learn anything jumping in head first. Do you understand how to sketch and dimension in Solidworks? A decent drafting skills wouldl be a big plus, but you don't need to be an engineer to use this program. It just takes time. Thats all.

What version of Solidworks are you using? As soon as you let me know, I will write a simple sketch/extrude tutorial. This way, we will start off lightly and I won't throw too much info. at you at one time.

I may make an advanced rim tut sometime in the future.
might end up being in inventor though, cause I can draw a bit better in inventor, but they're pretty mcuh the same program anyway.
