Talking Realistic Black Paint

Hey everybody. Photorealistic black paint is kind of difficult to achieve and a lot of times it requires some significant brushing to get all of the reflections and everything right. This is a pretty simple and effective way to create black paint on a car in a simple outside environment. First, we will start off with this car.

Using the polygonal selecting tool, select all of the body parts which you would like to convert to black. Press shift+click to add selection, and alt+click to subtract selection area. Once you have everything you want selected, press ctrl+c and then ctrl+v to paste your selection as a new layer.

Now, right click on your new layer, and press duplicate. Repeat this step. You should have a total of three different paint layers. Click on the little eye next to the layers to make the top two paint layers invisible, leaving only one paint layer and the background layer visible. Select the visible paint layer. Press ctrl+shift+U to desaturate the layer. Then go to image> adjustments> variations. In this case, the paint shade is relatively light, so we have to bring it down quite a bit to make it black. Slide the bar all the way to coarse and click where it says "Darker" once. Then press OK.

Okay, now make the next paint layer visible. While holding alt, click near one of the lightest points in the sky to get that color on your pallet. Press ctrl+click on the layer to bring up its selection. Change your brush mode to color, and using a big brush, go over the paint layer. This will change the color of the paint to that of the sky.

Now change the blending mode of the sky color paint layer to overlay. This will bring color and needed contrast to the black paint layer.

Now, make the last paint layer visible. For this sunset-like environment we're going to want an orangeish color, so we are just going to use the stock paint. If using a different color car, you may repeat the last step but just using an orangeish color to change this last layer to match this sunset environment.

Okay, now change the blending mode of the orange layer to vivid light and bring the opacity down to about 50%. It should look about like this.

Now comes the hard part. When you're done, most of this last layer will be erased. Erase all of the darker oranges and reds in last layer and also all of the body parts facing the sky. In this case, the front of the car should be erased because it is not facing the sunset. You just want to leave the light parts of this layer because the darker parts would get lost in the black paint anyway. When you're done, it should look something like this.

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial and you get good results!

well i havent tried it, but i suppose it would work. You might have to play with some of the blending modes and master opacities though.

Very nice outcome, I'm impressed. Looks like someone is getting a head start on some prize money. Good luck.

BTW, do this with a white car and I'll be more impressed ......

you would go about it the same way. when you go to the variations window, go lighter instead of darker. the environmental reflections would be a lot less intense too.
