blender, wings3d, gmax are all free, and purrty darn good. yafray is a free raytracer
maya, 3dsmax, rhino, softimage|xsi, cinema4d, lightwave all cost over $1000 but are very advandce. vray, renderman, and mental ray are your renders for those

I am lucky enough to own a copy of Maya Unlimited 7.0... that is a sweet program... there's a free "Personal Learning Edition" that runs forever, but it watermarks everything you render.

im currently using cinema 4d and its quite complicated to learn. its hard to teach yourself, unlike photoshop. I'm jealous of whoever has maya tho, that's what pixar currently uses i think.

i'll stick to 3ds max for now.

maya is the top-of-the-line if i remember right; 3DsMax is up there though.. back in highschool i used this program called Animation Master:2000, it was pretty decent; i only did models back then.. since then, i cant find a decent copy of it -- i lost my cd
in school i had access to maya and 3Dmax.. but never had any classes for them, as im graphic-artist, not game-art designer. [now that im outa school] ..
i think most movie production studios make thier own programs to suit thier needs.. im not sure 100% do though.

i'm using Blender3D. It's free and Open Source.
"Blender is the open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. Available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License."

In the Art and Design Business world I believe depending the line of work it would go...
-Rhinoceros
-Solidworks
-Alias
-Pro E
-Unigraphics
3ds Max is more for animation and that kind of work not 3d rendering.

i would have to disagree. MAX comes with a wonderful rendering engine called Mental Ray.
http://www.mentalimages.com/4_0_gallery/index.html
if that doesn't do it for you there's also Brazil, Final Render, Maxwell, and Vray. all work very well with max, Brazil in particular is very user friendly.
here's something i just did.....3ds MAX, rendered with Brazil r/s : Fisheye lens (8mm). it's not even a high quality render, default settings.
