Is the "rat-rod" an American invention by any chance?

I don't think that the rat rod has a specific place of origin, it simply refers to people who have junky cars that are actually really fast, since they can't afford making them look nice, since that is second on the list.

Might be because they were badged as Rabbits before they were golfs (at least here in the states).

1984 Ad:

or because they are reverting back to that name:

Normal people ?

i saw yobyalp and thought this is what this thread was about lol jk. I think rat rods refer to the broke hot rodders (worlswide) who are about speed than looks, so i dont think it has an origin. That vw looks quick i wonder if it seen the salt flats.

Rat rods are all about speed and power, none of this "I'm too busy polishing my car everyday to go out and have some fun in it... I might scratch the paint... etc". Rat rods/cars are cheaply bought and built cars that are meant to be driven... and driven hard, like my lovely Veccy Take N.A.S.C for instance, a car club that's all about hot rods, but more about just having fun with them and blasting them round tracks. If any of you guys from the UK get PPC (Practical Performance Car) mag, there's a write up about NASC in the September issue.

as for the rabbit vs. golf name issue, heres the big answer.

the name rabbit was used for the MKI (US spec 1975-1984) and MKV (US spec 2005.5-2009), whereas golf was used for MKII, MKIII, MKIV, and now MKVI as well (US spec 1985-1992, 1993-1999, 1999.5-2005, and 2010+, respectively).

the car in the picture is a MKI, so therefore a rabbit. i think its a really cool idea, and has been passed along to other VW communities.

LOL I love it! Originally, rat rods were built with whatever the owner could come up with for parts to make the car run, no extra frills. Not necessarily to go fast, but just to go. Most of then didn't want an old, rusty, unsafe car, but they couldn't afford anything better. Today, the term has kind of lost it's meaning because some guys spend big bucks on rare parts and faux rusty finishes.

Precisely! I hate what all these boyracers have turned rat into... They take a modern-ish car, stick a roofrack on it with a few barrels (why?), strip the paint off the bonnet and stick it in salty water so it rusts, polish up the rest of the paintwork a bit, and then put expensive alloys on... WTF!?!?!?

Natural rust = cool
fake rust = stupid
Also, roof racks belong on beetles, not MKVs.
