The one problem with that is that it favors either left- or right-handed people, whereas the current model is ambidextrous.

Thanks, There's been a lot of talk of a Touch screen iPod but it doesn't that plausible I guess so I did my version of what it might look like because the current 5G iPod Video isn't a true Video player.
These are some other versions like mine that I found.

lol That's why I purposely made it left handed (I'm a lefty) to get back at you right handed bastards. Nah... I'm working on another version that will take care of that problem and also allow games to be played on it more easily. I may or may not post it though. Stupid idea stealling which sucks.

See, what I figure they'll do... make it touch-sensable (actually texture the scroll wheel), and put the scroll wheel on the back, so you have the full visibility of the touch screen model, without NEEDING to get your greasy mitts all over the screen.

Interesting compromise because they were concerned about that.
On my concept I would make it so the screen and buttons can be selected for right or left. When it is selected the button lights change because they are backlit and images not painted on. A similar idea to the Optimus Keyboard

Ya see... but which is more expensive... texturing the scroll wheel, or including another set of (O)LEDs plus filters?

Yeah... I suppose, I figure it's gonna be pretty expensive anyway you spin it (no pun intended). lol

I think people would be pretty annoyed if they were forced to use it a certain way, I know I would if it was right handed only. The fed up part is they still would make it right handed only just because there are more righties than lefties. :Crys discrimination: lol
Yeah the keyboard is pretty sweet.

Hmm well you can take the idea that some newer digital cameras use, and design it so that the ipod’s sensor automatically rotates the picture on the screen, depending on how you’re holding the device. (i.e. hold it vertically and screen is vertical; hold it horizontally with buttons on either left or right and the image is horizontal and oriented properly either way).
As for your concern about people stealing your idea, you can register your invention for a patent for a small fee (and a renewal fee every year), and your idea will be protected. The only thing is that you CANNOT use the name "iPod". And obviously you can't afford to mass-produce this product (unless you're super-rich) so sell the idea to a manufacturing company for a hefty price, see where it takes you.
Hope this helps, good luck!
