Godspeed: Ring of Fire @ Superdome, Sydney (10/07/04)
Reported on Tuesday, Jul 13, 2004. 15:45 by kris19
The Sydney Superdome played host to Godspeed’s Ring of Fire in what has been described as a world class history-making event. Not only did Powerhouse Productions secure some of the world’s best hardcore DJ’s to play alongside the pick of Australia’s talent but they introduced rare and powerful lighting and effects not seen before by Sydney punters.
Engulfing the dance floor where people usually sit were flames of light bringing literal meaning to the events title. Throughout the night the Superdome came alive with spectacular lighting and laser effects put together by a nationwide team of professionals. Using lasers producing millions of colours, the production team showed off their technical expertise by sending beams and tunnels of light to the far corners of the dome. It was as breathtaking as it was powerful. Amazing animation and futuristic lighting shows pushed the limits of dance-party production and the integration of 3D technology absolutely blew me away.
As well as awe-inspiring effects it was a night of banging, hard and melodic music to rival any past Godspeed party. The internationals, all from the UK, filled the main arena with quality hardcore sets.
Kicking off the all-star British line-up DJ Brisk set the tone for a night of classic anthems and thumping baselines with his trademark happy hardcore sound. Feet were a-stomping as he incorporated tracks from his Next Generation label - real euphoric melodies and hard, banging breakdowns, in a smashing one-hour midnight set.
DJ Dougal, who co-owns the Essential Platinum label with hardcore legend Hixxy, showed off his turntable skills in a high energy, jam-packed performance. Mixing up banging classics with his own rave hits, there wasn’t a hand far from the air as he pumped out crowd favourites Paradise and Sunrise.
Headlining the event were popular DJ/producers Breeze and Styles, crowd-pullers in there own right, who have become somewhat legendary in hardcore circles. Combining Styles’ natural musical ability and Breeze’s years of experience their unique style of hardcore has produced endless hits and countless quality remixes.
Although the line-up promised individual sets and a combined finale, the pair instead opted to perform a joint two-hour set. Filled with trance-like synths and euphoric harmonies the boys blew the roof off the dome with their fast and frenzied party tracks. They also took the opportunity to test drive a few new tracks and by the looks of the crowd, they will be sure-fire hits! Fans were not disappointed with the 2-hour set, culminating in the classic rave anthem, Your Shining.
Bringing in the morning were our own homegrown hardcore DJ’s.
Weaver, who keeps the scene fresh on the home front, played his own Raver Baby hits as well as a smashing remix of Limp Bizkit’s Behind Blue Eyes, mixing up a storm for adoring fans. He handed the decks over to fellow local legend DJ Suae for the sunrise set, who proved that he is still one of Sydney’s best scratch-masters. The track selection was perfect for the dawn timeslot providing a final jab of fresh and energetic hardcore to still-raring partygoers. And considering it was his first main-room set, he hid his nerves superbly.
Hardcore events of this size don’t come around all that often so it is nice to see them go off with a bang! The production really was top-notch and the impressive line-up was as good if not better than expected of such big-name hardcore players.
