Creating Rust Tutorial
This tutorial will show you how to create a realistic rust effect on your car.

Step 1:

Lets start off with this Honda Civic .

Step 2:

Use your Polygonal Lasso Tool and start selecting the pieces that you want to have rust on.

Step 3:

Here we have used the polygonal lasso tool and selected different parts of the Civic.  Using the shift key we can select multiple portions of the car.

Step 4:

Create a new layer.  This is where we are going to create our rust pattern over top of the Civic.

Step 5:

To create the rust we are going to need a rust colored palette.  Lets use orange and brown as our foreground and background colors.

Step 6:

Now choose Filter/Render/Clouds

Step 7:

Now choose Filter/Render/Difference Clouds

Step 8:

Now choose Filter/Distort/Diffuse Glow.  Keep your settings as close to mine as possible.  Depending on the angle of your subject car you may wish to play around.

Step 9:

Now choose Filter/Artistic/Palette Knife.  Once again try to use my settings unless the car is in a different angle it may look better with different values.

Step 10:

Now choose Filter/Artistic/Plastic Wrap.  This is where we are going to get a little depth to our rust.  Like I said before try to use roughly the same values as below.

Step 11:

Your rust pattern should look something like this so far.

Step 12:

Now we will add some noise.  Go to Filter/Noise/Add Noise.  Keep your values similar to mine.

Step 13:

You can now play around with the Dodge Tool and the Burn tool by brightening and darkening sections of your rust.  Don't spend too much time on this step.

Step 14:

Now we will right click on the new rust layer we created and select blending options.  From the blending options menu choose Bevel and Emboss.  Make your settings very similar to mine once again.  You may wish to play around at this point to get a realistic effect.

Step 15:

Your final product should look something like this.  With more time and patience you can get a very realistic pattern.  In this case only sections look realistic.  But you get the just of things.
