Dear buyer,
Iwill try to share my experience and to explain the exact condition of our Alienware 17x R2.
  • The computer first fault was related with the touch pad buttons. After long search I managed to find an OEM replacement of the touch pad - it was replaced with a new original touch pad bracket. (Another brand new spare bracket+buttons is available).

  • The second issue was related with the cooling system - apparently those computers have issue with the IPMI sub-system - the thermal management. The GPU was not properly cooled for a long time during heavy load and we were forced to use FAN management software to cool it down. Unfortunately, we discovered the issue too late and we were forced to replace the original GTX880m (we paid for reworking - without success) with another GPU controller - GTX980m - It worked well for a while.

  • The third and current issue is related with the back light of the LCD screen. One day, the built in display just stopped. I discovered the HDMI/DP output is still fully functional, the computer is fully operational with external screen and the computer screen is working but the back light does not. I also discovered when I connect another device (such as laptop) to the HDMI-IN port (using the laptop as a portable display) and force software swap between the iGPU/dGPU adapters [FN+KEY] after the computer OS restarts, the screen back light goes on and work fine as long it works as an external display. If I unplug the external device or try to force HDMI-IN -> HDMI-OUT, the display back light goes off again. After a conducted research and reading the Main board schematics, it appeared that the semi conductors called PILVD1012BE, which are dealing with iGPU/dGPU swap, might be the issue. Their price is less than $10USD (4 QTY). Unfortunately, I don\'t have the time and the desire to play with the computer any long.
