Theabove was a brief description, please read everything below fordetails and compatibility, which includes more photos.

DETAILSand long description.

Withoutthe hinge preventative maintenance, it is a 100% given that eMatehinges will fail and the video cable punctured, after opening andclosing the lid more than several times, if not after the first time. This eMate has the hingemodification ( On both hinges) which will prevent video cablepuncture, AND has a reinforced cable . Almost all of theeMates advertised online (might as well say all) are either fromestate/garage sales, school sales, or have been sitting insomeone\'s closet for many years. These eMates are being pulled out ofstorage and photographed after opening the lid only several times atmost.

Everytime the lid is opened and closed, the hinge legs slide further downthe base and dig into the metal below, until they pop out andpuncture the video/touch screen cable. Even if the cable has not beenpunctured (which would be rare) the lid will fail to stay open, unless set at a precise angle, even then it is only a matter of timebefore the video/touch screen cable is damaged, resulting in eitherno video, a loss of touch screen response, or both.

AneMate advertised as still holding a battery charge, will fail afterseveral days of use (if not much sooner). The original eMatebatteries now date to early 1998, at the earliest, and early 1997 atthe latest . Very soon the batteries will no longer hold a charge atall. You can still order a new battery pack from one source, howeverit is a specialty ordered item that takes two months to ship, youhave to install it, and it is not an improvement over the originalbattery pack longevity wise.

Youcan rebuild a battery pack, BUT,if you use full sized tabbed NiMH batteries, it slightly distorts thecompartment (which is not really a big deal, it will not break theplastic in the compartment in most cases). Finding quality NiMHtabbed batteries at a fair price is almost impossible. Even my mosttrusted supplier shipped me cells that were counterfeit (instead of2000 mAh AA, 800mAh AAAs wrapped in counterfeit AA cases). Also, ifyou do not use tabbed cells, and try off the shelf NiMH rechargeablebatteries to rebuild your battery pack, prepare yourself for anexpensive journey. The high heat soldering temperatures required toadhere the polyfuse and battery leads, can cause damage. If you havenever used a soldering iron, then you are looking at a substantialinvestment.

Ino longer rebuild battery packs, instead I perform the batteryupgrade. The upgrade is safer, reliable, more economical, withall new parts, and no distortion of the battery compartment. It is aclip on solution that gives you the option of another batterycombination down the road (even using non-rechargeable batteries in apinch), or reverting back to the original type pack (if it has beenrebuilt). It involves no modification of the eMate. Theupgrade includes a new polyfuse and thermistor for safety.PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT USE THE CHARGERIF YOU EVER INSTALL NON RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES WITH THIS EMATE, yourun the risk of serious damage to the eMate, and/or fire, if youreplace the rechargeable cells I send with it, with non-rechargeablecells. A driver will be included that fits the torx screwswhich secure the battery cover to the eMate.

Batteryreplacement should be a mute topic, as thiseMate ships with Panasonic eneloops, the highest quality rechargeablebatteries available! They can be recharged 2100 times andstill hold 70% capacity after ten years, at 1900 mAh. The originalbattery pack had 900 mAh cells. The new eneloop cells give you 110%more usage than the original Apple battery pack, and discharge at afar lower rate when not in use.

Itis a gamble to buy an eMate without the original Apple H0165 charger, this eMate has the original charger. You may seeeMates and Newton 2000/2100s offered with a third party charger/powersupply, take caution. I have smoked two eMates and one Newton 2000 with two different after market supplies, from three differentvendors (I didn\'t realize the second vendor offered the same partnumber after market supply). If the price for the adapter seems toogood to be true, then it is. Stick to the original Apple H0165. Theafter market supplies may work for a week or so, then your batterieswill fail to charge (possibly starting a fire). The Newton 100series chargers/supplies, are lacking , they fail to fully charge thelatter Messagepad 2000/2100s and eMates (at least that has been myexperience using “batteryTrax”with the eneloops?)

TheeMate (or any Messagepad for that matter) does not support WPAsecurity for wireless routers. All wireless cards listed on for the Messagepad 2000/2100 or eMate are WEP cards. Your router mustbe WEP capable. The wireless cardprovided with this eMate will work with 64 WEP. Make sureyour wireless router is WEP capable. I have never had a problem withany WEP routers (64bit), however I cannot guarantee the WEP routeryou may be using? You can connect to the internet with this eMate, but will only be able to do feeds, and just maybe email?

Asa workaround to my new router/modem which only supports WPA, I plugin a Belkin N150 (WEP encrypted) to it and turn off the onboardwireless. You can pickup an early Apple Airport/Airport extreme BaseStation that is WEP capable for pretty cheap on .

Asseen in the photos, you can connect to several sites, but of coursethere\'s not much you can do when you connect to them? So this littleNewton is not for surfing the net, at most you can do text feeds andin some cases email.

Youcan still get early Apple base stations at a steal, which are WEPencrypted, however with WEP you are taking a chance at privacy foryour more modern machines on the same network? BUT, I must say that Inever had anyone “HACK” my network with WEP wifi, well maybeexcept for the NSA?

TheKeySpan USA-28 Serial to USB adapter works great using Mac OS10.12. and using the supplied FREE software available on the web. Andhas supplied drivers for older OS X versions, including System 9. The software also comes on the DVD for this adapter.

Doingan extended test over the course of several days with an older Applecomputer ( such as all the compact Macs from the 128k to the ClassicII) is completely useless in determining that you will receive aproduct that will not fail a day or two after receipt.HOWEVER, in the case of the Messagepads and eMate, they draw lowcurrents, generate little heat, and lack those capacitors, resistors, diodes, that frequently fail on the older Macintosh machines. ThiseMate was tested was fully charged on August 15th 2017, after threedays of use, 1/3 of which had the wireless card installed, it stillhad an 80% charge! I just graduated college in my late forties, andused my eMate to take notes in class for over two years, TAKE THATIPAD:)

Theselittle machines are built like tanks, and are still completely usefulfor doing day to day note taking. I prefer the hand writingrecognition over the new Apple products, any day of the week!!! (justmy personal preference......)

PLEASENOTE: The eMates and Messagepads have IR capability, however Applenever fully integrated them with the Macs that were IR capable!

Thisone of those rare (yes, I used the word rare again in an Appleproduct description.... I am so sorry) instances, where a collectibleitem is still extremely useful in everyday use. It is tough, reliable, simple to use, and just down right great to look at, thisis when Apple products actually had personality instead of shinyAl-lou-mini-um cases:)
